Spectrahedra are the feasible sets of semidefinite programming. They can be studied with methods from (real) algebraic geometry and convexity theory, but much can also be learned by looking at their free (=noncommutative) extensions. These turn out be be almost the same as abstract operator systems, a well-studied notion from operator algebra. This connection allows to transfer methods from operator algebra to semialgebraic geometry and vice versa, and leads to several interesting results. I will give an introduction and overview about these topics, and also explain how they can be applied to questions from quantum information theory.
