Abstract: We want to model an infectious disease (e. g. AIDS, malaria, Covid-19) with compartmental so-called SIR models. The simplest approaches lead to ordinary differential equations, which already show the typical behaviour of the course of the epidemic. We start with such a model and explain the basic concepts (compartment structure, limits, basic reproduction number). In order to get a more refined model which also takes care of the age structure of the population, we first discuss the general behaviour of such age-structured populations, then merge together the two concepts to obtain partial differential equation models, the treatment of which will also be discussed.
